Waves PR on the Digital Economy Bill

The Open Rights Group is calling for a debate on the Digital Economy Bill, which could be pushed through tomorrow without discussing the wide reaching implications of it.
For example, rushing through disconnection and website blocking would, in their words: “be undemocratic and an abuse of Parliamentary power; it would show contempt for back benchers and be a serious blow for the legitimacy of the legislation.”
With an election imminent, debate will be seen as an unnecessary delay, likely to railroad the whole bill. But, in my view, groups like the Open Rights Group are raising some serious concerns, worthy of serious examination before pushing through the bill.
If the debate doesn’t happen, there those concerns may remain unaddressed – and that might prove devastating for some of the many people and organisations that rely on an accessible Internet.

On the eve of likely decision making, I urge people to go and take a good look.
