Time is well overdue to blog some of the bits that came out of the
thupr content creation event for Social Media Week. First up:
video.
Just to put this in context – this was a half day event, part of Social Media Week, so there was always going to be a limit to what we could cover. But we covered a lot – more than I could note down, so what follows are a few, random notes, but still worth sharing.
.
Matt was proferring some basic tips on video usage.

Key takeaways:
- Video is great for drawing people in
- The first 45 seconds are vital for piquing interest
- Great for making a story human –new angles on stories possible (normal rules apply – case studies more interesting than self promotion!)
- Video doesn’t need to be perfectly centred if the video is compelling: using the top quarter of the video for the ‘eye’ helps people’s viewing experience
- Camera choice is important : separate microphone (knocks out surround sound) and tripod help hold shots for editing
- You can learn how to use Final Cut Pro to edit video in under an hour
- MPEG Streamclip worth a look

Drawnalism at #1pound40 unconference
I’m the person in the middle of this picture. Scott Gould of Like Minds is on the right. It was drawn at the brilliant 1 pound 40 unconference last year.
And the folk who drew it (Drawnalism) are going to be at the thupr event for Social Media Week, next Friday: Content Creation: Social Reporting.
Social Media Week, London, is going to be a busy one.
First up is a debate on ‘Who Owns the Social?’ - who should own social spaces – or at least the slice that gets the marketing budget?
Monday February 7, 2011
This emerged from a debate that I was having with Nichola Stott of themediaflow. It’s just a bit of fun, although we did ask an affiliate marketer who considered participating career suicide. She was probably right!
At the other end of the week, on Friday February 11, is the thupr event on Content Creation: Social Reporting
Friday February 11, 2011
This is a regular thupr event, given a Social Media Week theme.
A huge thank you is due to the guys at Nemisys, who I used to work alongside, for taking on the majority of the organization for the event.
