Posting press releases to blogs

Claire Thompson, Waves PR

It’s been raising some eyebrows amongst certain social media purists who have a healthy disdain for press releases but often don’t understand regulated markets: very occasionally we do put up press releases within the site.

(No, we don’t blast out press releases. They still have their place – but that’s another story altogether.)

Anyway, we post up the releases as a service to some of the people we serve – bloggers, journalists, communicators, organisations we support - so that people can pick up fully approved, accurate  information, particularly important for information coming from audited organisations (like charities) and listed companies (for stock market compliance).

This has proved to be a very effective strategy for helping pick up of stories, and the releases are clearly marked up as news.

We don’t actively promote these pages through social sites (culturally inappropriate), but it has proved a positive way for us to show some support for the work of Article 19 in Latin America (not a client), for example, where we would be unable to research an article and but wouldn’t rehash a release just for the sake of it – better to put up the full, approved release and link back.  This tactic has proved very worthwhile (for them) in terms of pick up of stories.

But if anyone has a better idea, within the limitations of the current structure of this blog, please feel free to suggest.
