Statement with Regard to Ipadio News Gathering from Iran
Ipadio allows anyone to broadcast live from any phone, anywhere, to the web. A raft of international numbers mean ipadio can be used from numerous locations at low or no cost, and we already have regular users in both France and the USA. In order to allow people to call and report from politically sensitive areas, we have applied for freephone numbers in a variety of other countries.
In response to requests both on and offline last week, we rushed through our application for a freephone number for users in Iran. Although this would normally take 35 days, the number was allocated to us over the weekend. However, it has not yet been activated. Given the current political situation in Iran, we anticipate that this may take some time.
The open channel for Iran, which required no registration, has therefore been closed for the time being.
Ipadio remains available for anyone wishing to use it, and the general UK access number can be used from anywhere that calls can be made to the UK.
A statement from Dr. Mark K. Smith, CEO, ipadio:
“We were delighted that people wanted ipadio to be used for newsgathering from Iran. The service is open to people of all political persuasions both in Iran and elsewhere. We have a strong desire to offer a platform that allows people to get their point across.”
