How to make phone calls safely from troubled zones
Waves PR, June 29, 2009:
Ipadio: notes for ‘citizen journalists’:
Please consider this before using ipadio to broadcast your news from a trouble zone. In the same way as authorities may monitor blogging activity on the Internet:
- you may find that phone systems in politically troubled areas (and some not so apparently troubled) are being monitored
- photography posted within ipadio can be used to identify locations
The following sites offer information that may be useful if you need to get news out:
Ihowd (www.ihowd.com/how-to-make-an-untraceable-phone-callhttp://cpj.org/reports/1998/07/ormeda.php)
How to do things: (www.howtodothings.com/electronics/how-to-make-an-untraceable-phone-call)
Please note that the information regarding some specific telephone numbers in both of these examples is US centric.
Highly respected international resources for reporters include:
Reporters Sans Frontiers: (www.rsf.org)
CPJ: Covering Conflicts Safely (http://cpj.org/reports/2003/02/journalist-safety-guide.php)
Global Voices Online: (http://globalvoicesonline.org/gv-authors/)
And a further resource can be found at CitizenLab. This is more Internet-centric but may have some relevance to internet-based phone services. (http://www.citizenlab.org/index.php )
The following video may also make interesting viewing (http://blip.tv/file/2102353)
We are happy to add recommended further sources to this list once reviewed. Please email suggestions in to support [at] ipadio.com
Please note that ipadio is supplied in the spirit of social media – a tool for the common good. Anyone is welcome to use ipadio from whatever political persuasion, speaking whatever language. You are asked to abide by our terms and respect other users.
