Citizen Journalism and Repression
Claire Thompson, Waves PR: June 25, 2009
I like many, was moved to turn my Twitter icon green last week to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people protesting peacefully in Iran. Since then, things have taken a more sinister turn.
In this phlog I consider my own experiences in Central America, and whether or not citizen journalism, however useful it may be for us as news gatherers, is a good thing in a repressed zones.
Sadly, it is impossible to put things right for Neda (Iran), and I believe that her story is one that was put in the public domain quite rightly. But for reporting to the outside world, should we really be encouraging citizen journalism from any and everyone, when it is them, not us, who face the consequences?
